What is fore planes?

Fore planes are a type of hand plane used for rough and intermediate level smoothing of wooden surfaces. They come in a longer size, typically around 18-22 inches in length, and have a flat sole and wide blade. The blade extends through the plane body and can be adjusted to different depths to remove material from the wood surface. Fore planes are used after the rough work with scrub planes and jack planes and before the final smoothing with smoothing planes. They are used to quickly level and flatten large surfaces and remove saw marks, wood grain, and other irregularities. They are commonly used by carpenters, woodworkers, and furniture makers.
